Whether you’re new to an area or searching for a group of friends with similar backgrounds and interests, meeting people isn’t always easy. Fortunately, Roanoke Rapids has plenty of social places and events that allow you to mingle with other like-minded individuals. No matter what your interests, you’re sure to find others to share your experiences, stories, and friendship.

1. Hux’s Billiards
Another fun place to interact with others and enjoy a friendly game is at Hux’s Billiards. Located in downtown Roanoke Rapids, Hux’s invites regulars and newcomers to engage in a game, or if you’re a seasoned pool hustler, join one of their ongoing pool leagues.

On weekends, the pool hall has some of the best DJs, musical acts, and karaoke, offering you a chance to dance or show off your pipes. If you’re a night owl, don’t worry. Hux’s is open until 2 a.m., allowing you to mingle until last call. Just make sure to get a ride home with your newfound friends.

2. Canal Walker’s Club
Make new friends and get some exercise with other hikers at the weekly meeting of the Canal Walker’s Club. Sponsored by the Canal Museum and the Jo Story Senior Center, this two-mile hike goes from the Canal Museum to Rochelle Pond and back. Feel free to walk or jog at your own pace, giving you plenty of time to fraternize with other participants. The club meets every Thursday at 8 a.m. When you’re done, it’s a perfect opportunity to grab a cup of coffee or breakfast with your new compadres.

3. Join a Yoga Class
Whether you say namaste regularly or you’re just starting your path to relaxation and enlightenment, yoga classes are an excellent way to improve your health and meet others along the way. New Day Fitness, Key Fitness, and Crowley’s Lifestyle Fitness in Roanoke Rapids all offer classes ranging from advanced to beginner. During these classes, you can rejuvenate the mind and body along with others. With any luck, you’ll be carpooling to yoga in just a few weeks.

4. Dog Parks
If your dog is your best friend, you’re not alone. However, enjoying the company of your canine with other dog-loving humans is the best way to forge a new relationship. To meet other dog owners, head to one of the many dog parks around town. The Halifax County Visitor Center Dog Run is an amazing place to let your dog run around, and you’ll get to meet people from Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and beyond.

Other options for dogs include the uninventively named Dog Park at Exit 173 off Interstate 95 or Chockoyotte Park located off Fourth Avenue in downtown Roanoke Rapids. Wherever you decide to let Fido run free, you’re sure to meet other dog owners that share the same common ground.

With numerous options to interact with others, Roanoke Rapids’ social scene is strong, even for a city of only 15,000. The next time you’re stagnating or wanting to get out and about, check out these Roanoke Rapids establishments, classes, and clubs.
